VOX PA50SS serial number 1289

"Vox Sound Limited", 1971

The Vox PA50SS was first shown by JMI at the Frankfurt Trade Fair of early March 1968 - . The amp was not put into production, however, until late 1968 or early 1969 by "Vox Sound Equipment Limited" (VSEL, the company that carried the "Vox" name forward following the winding up of JMI in mid 1968. Production was later taken over by "Vox Sound Limited" (VSL) in late 1970. VSL moved to the Birch-Stolec factory in St Leonard's on Sea, near Hastings, in late summer 1971. .

The pictures below are of serial number 1289, still in excellent condition. The main power transistors - 2N4347, as in Vox Defiants - have date codes 7001 = 1st week of 1970. The latest visible dateable component is a Sprague capacitor, code 7102 = 2nd week of 1971. The amplifier was probably built in mid 1971.

The metal chassis measures 14 1/2" x 4 3/4" x 10". The control panel is 5 1/4" tall and 14 15/16" wide. The wooden box measures 11 3/4" x 6" x 15 5/8".

If anyone knows of any other units, . Note that the box has silver string around it.
